Hot dip galvanizing my house main gate

Dear Kok Seong
Thank you for contacting us and the following are our reply.

1. if i make the gate using hollow steel section and solid steel rods welded together, can they be hot dipped galvanized? - All hollow steel frames or for that matter well fabricated steel can be hot dip galvanized but there is a need to be properly ventilated the hollow steel frame to allow zinc drainage and air venting please refer to our website again on "Design and Specifications"
2. after the gate had been hot dipped galvanized and if i later drill holes on it, will it start to rust? - Drilling will damage the galvanizing but as it is a thin material the damage is minimal. There will not be obvious sign of rusting as zinc do protect the drill area from rusting due to sacrificial protection of steel by zinc. Refer to our website "Corrosion of Steel"
3. after the gate had been hot dipped galvanized, and if i later do welding on it, will it start to rust? Welding galvanized steel will cause more damage than drilling as the welding process "burn away" the zinc coating. The damage is localized and the damage depends on the extend of welding and for small area the welded area can be treated by applying a coat of inorganic zinc rich primer and then painted over with a 2 pack epoxy paint.
i understand that welding the main gate in-situ cannot be avoided due to installation of either the eye-end -(for the hinge) or installation of bearings (at the hinges) need to be done last. Also, we might need to drill holes to install autogate components on it later.
We agree and it is sometimes unavoidable unless time is spent on planing before hot dip galvanizing and measurements taken accurately. Try using an experience fabricator whom has done many galvanized gates. Finally you must choose your design carefully and try not to add or change the design after sending your gate to the hot dip galvanizing plant.
Good luck and please let us know what is your location?

dear sir,
i am thinking of hot dipped galvanizing my house main gate and have a few questions about it:-

2. after the gate had been hot dipped galvanized and if i later drill holes on it, will it start to rust?

3. after the gate had been hot dipped galvanized, and if i later do welding on it, will it start to rust?

i understand that welding the main gate in-situ cannot be avoided due to installation of either the eye-end (for the hinge) or installation of bearings (at the hinges) need to be done last. Also, we might need to drill holes to install autogate components on it later.

hope you can provide some advice.

thank you.
